Today marked a fairly important day in modern American history: death to both Prop 8 and DOMA. When I stopped off at my parents’ house after work tonight, I excitedly (and only half-jokingly) informed my dad that I’m planning on being my new idol, Texas Sen. Wendy Davis (the LeBron James of filibustering), for Halloween and he replied that he had never heard of her. Astounded that anyone in America could have gone through their whole day without once hearing or seeing anything regarding the monumental day the SCOTUS and our country had, I gave him the 30-second bullet point version and looked him in the face, waiting for his response. His face twisted slightly in disgust as he spat the words that will haunt me in my sleep tonight:
"Not at all. I think it’s an abomination of nature."
How can someone I love so very much, someone who raised me, cares for me more than anything, someone who makes up half of my genetic structure, be so blatantly against what I believe in so strongly?
It doesn’t take away AT ALL from my undying love for my father, it simply makes me sad to realize that “those people”, the people that “we” are fighting against to win the freedoms and rights that all Americans deserve, can sometimes be the people closest to us, the people we most want on our side.
Joy and disappointment, juxtaposed. Bittersweet.
